Panelists:
Sheila Shea -
Tucson, Arizona
Sheila suffered from constipation since infancy and in her late teens
added eating disorders to her repertoire. Constipation and eating disorders
are great ways to damage the gut wall. In January of 2000, osteoarthritis
reared its ugly head in Sheila's left hip. Now she could relate to TV
adds on the very subject. All roads pointed to the gut. Some studies associated
osteoarthritis will imbalance in gut flora. Sheila jumped on the SCD in
total earnest in March of 2000 after looking at her x-ray. The major benefits
she has felt from the diet are near zero gas and bloat, the beginnings
of some bowel movements and yes, some major improvement in the osteo-
arthritis. These conditions take time to heal because it takes time to
heal the gut wall and balance the flora. Founder of the Intestinal
Health Institute in Tucson, AZ, Sheila has 24 years experience as
a licensed colon hydrotherapist practicing in Tucson and Miamai, FL.
Laura Tanzer -
Tucson, Arizona
Laura was finally
diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome five years ago. She has spent
most of her life with intestinal distress, and until going through some
emotional and physical therapy a dozen years ago had assumed everyone
had the same problems. Now she knows better. The journey toward healing
has been bumpy, yet illuminating, both physically and emotionally. Laura
is on a quest for 'perfect health'. Several factors contribute to Laura's
healing process; first, she had to establish a routine for regular elimination.
Second, she changed her diet, eliminating irritating foods. Third, she
experimented with supplements to aid the healing process (this done mostly
under the supervision of a doctor). Laura, like her husband, Mike, keeps
an online weblog called the ibslog,
about her trials and tribulations with IBS. Laura is currently finishing
a Ph.D. in Corporate Environmental Policy at the University of Arizona.
Laura and Mike are working on a book about their quest for intestinal
health.
Liz Attanasio
- Oro Valley, Arizona
Liz was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue in June 2000 after being misdiagnosed
with IBS for over 10 years. Her many symptoms included diarrhea, gas and
bloating, migraines, vomiting, chronic fatigue, depression and constipation.
Countless doctors told her "It's all in your head" or "Drink
Imodium and get on a treadmill". After her diagnosis with Celiac
Disease, she went on a gluten-free diet removing all wheat, rye, barley
and oats from her diet. Liz sought out the Specific Carbohydrate Diet
to help repair the extensive damage to her intestinal tract from the years
of undiagnosed Celiac Disease. She is thrilled with the results of the
SCD and has found a tremendous lessening of her symptoms including having
migraine-free days, depression-free days and feeling more energetic. For
the first time in 10 years, Liz says "I feel great. I can keep up
with my kids now. This is what life is supposed to feel like!"
Michael Simons
- Tucson, Arizona
Mike was diagnosed
with Crohn's disease during his teen years. After 15+ years of drugs to
combat pain and diarrhea, Mike discovered Elaine Gottschall's book. Six
months later (January 1st, 1997), Mike finally started the SCD. Symptoms
disappeared over the first 90 days, and since then he has maintained a
completely prescription-free controlled remission, and has experienced
no significant flares in Crohn's disease. In response to many inquiries
about what he eats on the SCD, he maintains an online "food log"
called "Nirvana of Peristalsis".
According to Mike, "Elaine Gottschall's book is to IBD what Rachel
Carson's Silent Spring
is to the environmental awareness movement." Mike specializes in
collaborative group process improvement through technology and facilitation.
Mike and his wife Laura Tanzer are working on a book about their quest
for intestinal health.
Workshop Leaders:
Lucy Ann McWilliams
- Tucson, Arizona
Lucy experienced acupressure 10 years ago after experiencing health problems.
A friend gave her the book "Acupressure
Potent Points", by Michael Reed Gach. After experiencing immediate
results, she was drawn to acupressure. She began practicing on family
and friends and was soon being called out as a practitioner. Schooling
was the next logical step, attending Gach's Acupressure Institute in Berkeley,
CA, where she studied acupressure, jin shin, shiatsu, reflexology, and
acuyoga. Afterwards she started her own private practice, where she works
with everyone from infants to the elderly, from minor injury and ailments
to the critically ill. Acupressure and its attributes have been proven
beneficial the health of your intestines. Lucy can be contacted (520)
241-4459 or acuyogie @ aol.com.
