BreakingTheViciousCycle.info has launched and is Elaine's personal web site, dedicated to information found in the book by the same title, by Elaine Gottschall. It provides information and guidance for those considering the SCD or beginning the diet, acts as a hub for all the support groups/ list serves that are true to SCD as described in Elaine's book, is an accessbile resource for all aspects of the SCD, and provides additional information to support the book. The main features of the site are: The Beginners Guide; The Knowledge Base (contains FAQ's and a Legal/Illegal list; a list of online Support Groups; a Search (making it easy to locate information wherever it is located on the site); and a News section reporting all the latest developments in the SCD world.

A special Valentine's Day story
Every February 14th we are reminded of the very special doctor, Dr. Sydney Valentine Haas. He was the doctor who saved Elaine and her daughter, and who created the SCD. Elaine went on to research this SCD, publishing her own books and now helping us each day online in the SCD lists!

SCD in the Wall Street Journal:
Wall Street Journal, 11/11/2002 Health Supplement
Eating Is Believing: Patients suffering from Crohn's disease say diet can help their pain. This article, by Francesco Fiodella, describes how the SCD works, what the patients and the doctors think of it. It goes on to explain why the SCD isn't more widespread, saying, "The failure of the IBD diet to gain widespread acceptance within the medical community is a lesson in the grim financial reality of medical research. Doctors don't accept treatments that aren't validated by controlled studies, and drug companies, which fund most medical research, pay to study pills, not diets."

The SCD Web Library (scdiet.org) was created in 1995 by Mid Aidt. His goal was to archive meaningful debate and discussion related to the SCD and intestinal health through diet. We are now approaching 2003; there are many SCD-related lists and online groups now! Some of the best are self-archiving (what will they think of next?!). Today's update: updated list of online email and support groups. The question is: which one(s) will you subscribe to? :-)

"Raw Life" author Paul Nison is touring the country to speak about his book, "Raw Knowledge". According to Paul's website, www.rawlife.com, he had ulcerative colitis and cured himself with raw foods. His diet does go quite against the SCD (especially the SCD's intro stages which prefer cooked foods) but his experience and perspective may be worthwhile for some. As you can see, diet *does* have something to do with intestinal health (whether it is the SCD, raw foods, paleolithic, going against the grain, etc.). :-)

"Most Popular Links" added!
After reviewing the web site statistics, we are providing links to the most popular pages in each directory. The 3-5 most popular links will be listed in the upper right of the homepage for each directory. So far we've updated the Recipes, Community, and FAQ sections. Stay tuned for the other sections!

Audrey Kron, of "Ask Audrey", passed away on the 25th of September. I had never heard of her before my recent "The Inside Tract" newsletter arrived, with an article requesting submissions by "people who had overcome their Crohn's disease" for a new, third book. Audrey had never let her illness hold her back and was the author of 2 books on IBD and chronic illness. I was hoping to submit something and went online today to learn more about her other 2 books and visit her web site (not listed in the request for submissions). A search on Google for Ask Audrey Kron resulted in an obituary listing...she passed away before finishing the new book. Who knows, perhaps her husband (or the CCFA) will finish it? From what I've recently learned, Audrey will be missed by many. - Mike Simons
